Gigin, India’s leading tech platform connecting informal workers to employers, has released exciting data highlighting an unprecedented influx of female participation across multiple job roles. The platform has witnessed significant growth of 100x in the number of female participants compared to previous years the number of women is on the rise. Increase in female gig workers is proof of our claim that when hurdles are removed and equal opportunities are provided, women outshine everyone around them.

The findings show that roles such as housemaids, HR and recruitment specialists, production worker assistants, customer service representatives, data entry clerks, and retail salespeople have experienced an over 300% rise in applications from women candidates. 75% of the increase in female gig workers is observed in Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi.

HR and recruitment specialists

The hiring trends for women in HR and recruitment specialist roles have shown significant activity in recent years. As of 2023, women have a substantial presence in the HR sector, often leading initiatives in recruitment and talent management. Approximately 25.5% of women are being hired for STEM-related roles, which include HR and recruitment specialist positions, especially in technology-focused companies.

The HR industry in India is increasingly leveraging automation and AI, which has streamlined the recruitment process and allowed for more efficient hiring practices. These technological advancements are aiding in attracting more women to HR roles by offering flexible work schedules and remote working options, which are highly valued by female professionals.

Moreover, the trend of providing flexible working conditions and enhanced work-life balance is particularly appealing to women, contributing to a higher retention rate and productivity. Companies that adopt flexible schedules and remote working options are seen to attract and retain the best talent, including a significant proportion of women in HR roles.

Production worker assistants

The representation of women in various sectors of the workforce is continually evolving. In manufacturing, women make up about 30% of the workforce, despite comprising 47% of the overall workforce. This sector has seen concerted efforts to attract more women, particularly in roles like production worker assistants, due to the increasing recognition of the value of a diverse workforce.

While specific statistics on the exact number of women hired as production worker assistants are not readily available, the general trend shows an increase in female participation in traditionally male-dominated fields like manufacturing. The industry is shifting to be more inclusive, with a focus on creating safer, cleaner, and more high-tech work environments, which are more appealing to women.

Efforts to support women’s entry into these roles include targeted educational programs and initiatives to improve workplace conditions and compensation.

This growing inclusion reflects broader trends in gender diversity and equity across many industries, acknowledging the essential role women play in the workforce and the benefits of a balanced and diverse work environment.

Customer Service Representatives

Customer service is a field where women make up a significant majority of the workforce. As of recent data, approximately 69% of customer service representatives in India are women, compared to 31% men. This trend is consistent across other regions as well, including the UK.

This high percentage indicates that customer service roles are more attractive or accessible to women, possibly due to the nature of the job which often requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, areas where women traditionally excel.

However, despite their dominance in numbers, women in customer service often face a leadership gap and are underrepresented in higher-level positions. Only about 48% of leadership roles in customer service are held by women, highlighting a significant disparity. The demographic trends within the customer service sector underscore the need for targeted initiatives to support career progression for women, ensuring they have equal opportunities to advance into leadership roles and bridge the existing pay gap.

Data Entry Clerks

In India, women are significantly represented in the field of data entry clerks. This profession has seen a substantial number of female workers due to various factors including the nature of the job, which can often be performed remotely or with flexible hours, making it appealing for women balancing work and family responsibilities. Data entry roles are particularly popular among women because they typically require skills such as accuracy, attention to detail, and basic computer proficiency—areas where many women excel.

According to various reports, women constitute a large percentage of the data entry workforce. For instance, globally, women make up approximately 80.1% of the data entry workforce, which is likely reflective of trends in India as well. Additionally, the average salary for data entry clerks in India is about ₹216,000 per year, which makes it a viable option for many women looking for stable employment opportunities that offer flexibility. These factors contribute to the high participation of women in data entry roles, highlighting the importance of this sector in providing employment opportunities for women in India.

Retail salespeople

In India, the retail sector is a significant employer, accounting for around 8% of the workforce, which translates to approximately 35 million people. This sector is rapidly growing and is expected to create 25 million new jobs by 2030. Women play a crucial role in this workforce, particularly in customer-facing roles such as retail salespeople. The Indian retail industry, valued at over USD 1.3 trillion by 2025, is experiencing exponential growth not just in major cities but also in tier II and III cities. This growth is driven by factors such as economic development, rising disposable incomes, urbanization, and evolving consumer preferences.

Furthermore, the organized retail market, which constitutes 12% of the total retail market, is expanding at a rate of 10% annually. This expansion provides more opportunities for women in various roles, including retail salespeople, as the demand for skilled labor in the retail sector increases.
