Excerpt- Across the world, Valentine’s Day is celebrated as the day of love.

Valentine’s Day, the day of love, is today. It is celebrated on February 14th and is also known as St. Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine. The day is a yearly celebration of love, friendship, and adoration. Saint Valentine, a 3rd century Roman saint, is honored on Valentine’s Day. It has become a significant cultural, religious, and economic celebration of romance and love in many world regions due to subsequent folk customs. Every year, people worldwide show their sentiments to their beloved by giving them various presents and sending them words of love and compassion.

History And Significance Of The Day

It has been suggested that the special day of love has its origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, which is observed in mid-February. Pope Gelasius banned the observance of Lupercalia around the end of the fifth century and is frequently credited for replacing it with St. Valentine’s Day. However, the exact origin of the feast is unknown at best.

According to Britannica, the day may have gotten its name from a priest called Valentine, who was executed in 270 CE by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus for covertly assisting Christian couples in getting married to save husbands from battle. The emperor did not believe in marriage and thought unmarried men were better suited as warriors.

As a result of this, his feast day is connected with love. In the 14th and 15th centuries, it became connected with romantic love. In 18th-century England, the day became an opportunity for couples to show their feelings of love to their spouses by gifting them flowers, candy, and greeting cards.
