Dancing Through Adversity: Dr. Ananda Shankar Jayant on Finding Strength, Purpose and Joy
What happens when life suddenly asks us to face one of its toughest challenges? Where do we find the courage to begin again?
For Padma Shri Dr. Ananda Shankar Jayant, the answer came from a strength she had cultivated over a lifetime—through discipline, dedication and dance.
One of India’s most celebrated classical dancers, choreographers and dance scholars, Dr. Jayant has built an extraordinary life across the worlds of art, administration and academics. A Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi exponent, motivational speaker, arts entrepreneur and former senior officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service, she has consistently embraced every role with purpose and determination.
But one of the most challenging chapters of her life began when she was diagnosed with cancer.
For Dr. Jayant, dance was never simply a profession. It was a way of life. Years of rigorous practice had taught her patience, discipline and the ability to persevere through difficult moments. When cancer entered her life, these very qualities became her greatest source of strength.
Her journey through illness, healing and self-discovery is now captured in her new memoir, Dancing with Joy, published by Garuda.
At its heart, the book is not simply about cancer. It is about resilience, purpose and the human ability to find meaning even when life takes an unexpected turn.
“Cancer is a mind game, and dance—my core strength—taught me to ride both the crab and my mind,” she writes.
The words reflect a journey that was as much about overcoming fear and uncertainty as it was about physical healing.
