What is a Fashion Designing:
A Fashion designer is a creative professional who brings innovative and stylish fashion to the market. They conceptualize and develop innovative clothing, accessories, and footwear. They should be updated on current fashion trends and should be able to predict future styles. They blend artistic vision with technical expertise in textiles, dyes, fibres, and garment construction. Fashion designers can be found working in diverse environments, such as design studios, fashion houses, and retail companies.
Fashion designers as a Career
As a fashion designer, your role involves staying abreast of industry trends to create cutting-edge designs. You may express your creativity through hand-drawn sketches or utilize computer-aided design software (CAD). Many designers choose to embark on independent ventures, focusing on their own original concepts. Some analyse market trends and forecasts to anticipate consumer preferences and future demand. Additionally, you may be responsible for organizing fashion events or shows to showcase your designs and connect with potential clients.
Internships play a crucial role in this field. When in college it is best to gain experience through assisting fashion stylists so that one can be updated with industry trends.
Becoming a Fashion Designer : A step-by-step guide
- Mandatory subjects in class 11th : class 10th and 12th with any subjects as per ones Board’s scheme of studies
- Graduation: B.Des. One can also do M.Des.
3. Alternative Careers for a Fashion Designer: Textile Designer, Artist, Interior Designer, Jewellery Designer.
College For Fashion Designing Course:
- Bachelor of Fashion Design: NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology), National Institute of Design (NID), Pearl Academy, and Arch College of Design and Business, Jaipur, are some of the best colleges in India for fashion designing.
- Diploma/ Certification in Fashion Styling: JD Institute of Fashion and Technology, Indian School of Design and Innovation (ISDI), Mumbai, NIFT Delhi offers certifications in the field for up to 9 months. Some online courses from portals like Swayam, Coursera. Interior designing course (PG) from JS Institute of Design.
- Bachelors in Fashion Merchandising: Multiple branches of NIFT, Indian School of Design and Innovation, MIT Institute of Design, and Pearl Academy are the best options for a degree in fashion merchandising.
- Bachelor of Design in Textile Design: Aspirants can enroll in NIFT Delhi and Mumbai along with other branches, Mumbai University, AAFT, Banaras Hindu University to pursue a degree in B.Des Textile Design.
