Women’s Reservation Bill

In our maiden ‘Women in Leadership’ report launched in September 2023, we highlighted the under-representation of women across academia, corporations and the shift in mindset needed to bring equal representation. Women make up half of the world’s population and are a formidable force with immense capabilities and unique perspectives, and yet they do not get equal opportunities as men do. Imagine this – why does a woman alone need to take a parental leave and take care of the baby, when the man can take work trips? We need to make a fundamental shift across policies, governance, the way we deploy these policies and unintended bias.

As Sheryl Sandberg once said, “In the future there will be no female leaders, there will just be leaders” and this needs a shift in mindset in men, and women.

In this context, The Women Reservation Bill is an affirmative step, and will encourage academia, corporations and societies to follow suit. However, the government also needs to revisit its approach to women and their career across other statutes, right from the factories act to parental benefits act.”
