The world of real estate has long been dominated by men. An industry that is responsible for building homes for a population where women make up almost 50% must adopt an inclusive approach, striving to have as many women in leadership positions. As per statistics, women make up 33% of the workforce in India, while men are at 67%. Among employable individuals, women account for 52.8%, a notable increase from 46.2% in 2021 to 50.3% in 2022. An Anarock survey indicates that 65% of women express a preference for real estate investments over gold or stocks.
While women have started to make space in this traditionally male-dominated field, it is crucial to foster an inclusive environment that supports their fast growth and success. Among the total 57 million individuals working in the domestic construction and real estate sector, women constitute only 7 million workers. Another report added that a mere 2% of women occupy executive-level roles in construction firms, and they receive 15% less compensation than their male counterparts in leadership positions.
Fostering inclusivity in the real estate sector is crucial for several reasons. Diverse perspectives are a driving force behind innovation. When women are encouraged and supported in the industry, it can lead to creative solutions, improved strategies, and a competitive edge in the market
Women in real estate also play a significant role in meeting market demands and breaking stereotypes. Women often have specific requirements and preferences when it comes to real estate, and having people who understand these requirements ensures that these needs are not only recognized but also addressed effectively. Similarly, inclusivity demonstrates that the real estate sector is not exclusive to a particular gender or group. By fostering a welcoming environment for women and actively involving them in the industry, we challenge preconceived notions and traditional gender roles.
So, how can we create a more supportive environment for women in real estate?
Education and Training
Programs tailored to women in real estate can equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to excel. Moreover, workshops and seminars on subjects like negotiation skills, leadership, and market trends can help bridge any existing gender gaps.
Mentorship Programs
Pairing women with experienced mentors can provide guidance, support, and a platform for women to discuss challenges and seek solutions.
Flexible Work Arrangements
Offering flexible work arrangements, such as remote work options and family-friendly policies, can make it easier for women to balance their personal and professional lives.
Equal Pay and Opportunity
Inclusivity extends to equitable compensation and the opportunity for career advancement and it should be a non-negotiable principle.
Cultural Change
Foster a company culture that is welcoming and supportive of women. Ensure that there is zero tolerance for discrimination or harassment.
Fostering inclusivity in real estate is not just a matter of social justice; it’s a strategic imperative. As the industry evolves, embracing diversity becomes a competitive advantage. By creating a supportive environment for women, the real estate sector can harness the power of diverse perspectives, drive innovation, and better meet the needs of an increasingly diverse clientele.
