Mental Health Counselling Among Working People

Mental health is a buzzword in today’s times. However, the topic is slightly limited to an individual’s mental health in a more personal space rather than on an organisational level. This fact makes it hard for working people to seek mental health counselling without any stigma attached to it in their social setting. The challenges that working people face are many; with stress, depression, and anxiety being quite common. These challenges that affect job performance should be dealt with at the right time.

The advantages of mental health counselling for working people and the organisation are many.

1. The counselling helps the recipient to maintain a work-life balance and cope with stress in a more mindful manner than in outbursts and conflicts, which might lead to poor interpersonal relationships in the workplace. In-house counsellors would help the organisations prevent sickness absenteeism that results due to such stress.

2. Mental health counselling also helps to manage burnout and resolve any issues that they might be having related to career growth or job satisfaction. The organisation is likely to benefit from this in the long term since it would have a staff that is entirely dedicated to their work.

3. Awareness about mental well-being should be spread in the workplace, and programs should be organised for employees. This would help eliminate any kind of stigma or shame that pervades the office environment. This would also help to make employees come out and seek counselling when they feel they need it.

Mental health counselling among working people is a very important topic that merits attention, today more than ever when 15% of working people around the globe are living with a mental disorder. It would help to increase their productivity as counselling would equip them with the necessary coping and relaxation strategies.
