Wellness Beyond Periods: How Menstrual Health Reflects Overall Lifestyle Choices

Menstrual health is one of the most important indicators of general health since it captures how lifestyle factors work with bodily functions. Analytical methods of defining a woman’s health regard her menstrual cycle as crucial. Certain lifestyle factors have been shown to influence both the regularity of menstruation and the severity of discomfort experienced by women for the duration of the cycle. A case in point is the research of the Revista da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto journal, which observed a significant prevalence of certain lifestyle factors in relation to pain intensity during menstruation.  The finding suggests that women’s lifestyles broadly control the degree of pain they experience during dysmenorrhea. More precisely, nutrition is among the high determinants of health; anaemia or undernourishment, especially due to insufficient iron, tends to exacerbate menstrual difficulties.

Anaemia refers to a condition where there is a deficiency of haemoglobin and may result due to excessive blood loss, which can lead to weakness.  The National Library of Medicine considers iron to be one of the key nutrients which are critical during the processes of birth and sustaining life.  Other factors include overconsumption of junk foods, coffee, or alcoholic beverages, which may lead to increased hormonal imbalances, bringing about greater dysregulation of the monthly rhythm and more pre-menstrual tension.  In addition, stress is a modern-day issue that poses an equal threat to the health of women and their reproductive systems.  The HPA axis controls stress and tends to work alongside the reproductive system, which can influence the menstrual cycle to some extent.

In times of increased stress, the body releases cortisol, which has the ability to inhibit the correct functioning of the HPO axis stimulating the ovary, which can result in menstruation not occurring as it should.  CRH is already known to participate in disruption to the menstrual cycle.  The resulting disturbances may present as skipped periods, missing periods, or worsening premenstrual syndrome symptoms.

Besides diets and stress, sleep is yet another critical factor. The National Sleep Foundation asserts that adults need to get enough sleep of seven to nine hours each night. Not sleeping enough may disrupt hormonal balance and raise menstruation gaps along with fatigue. Additionally, exercise is always useful; however, an excessive amount makes it impossible to achieve the desired results. Lack of physical activity contributes to the development of amenorrhea. Conversely, excessive physical activity can intensify symptoms associated with PMS (premenstrual syndrome). A study conducted in Canada discusses the relationship between exercising and the menstrual cycle. These components together demonstrate that menstrual cycle issues serve as an important marker of health, as they indicate the existence of more complex behavioural factors.
