The Most Ignored Inequality in India — Women Eat Last and Least Nutrition

When we talk about inequality in India, we often think of education, careers, or pay gaps. But one of the most silent and overlooked inequalities begins much earlier — at the dining table.

In many Indian households, there is an unspoken rule: women serve everyone first and eat last. It may seem like a small cultural habit, even a gesture of care. But over time, this practice has quietly created a serious nutritional imbalance.

The numbers reflect this reality. Nearly 57% of women in India are anaemic, largely due to iron deficiency. For many women, symptoms like constant fatigue, hair fall, weakness, or low energy have become so common that they are simply accepted as a part of everyday life. What we often fail to realise is that these are not just minor inconveniences, but signs of deeper nutritional gaps.

This issue becomes even more significant when we remember that women are the centre of nutrition in most families. They decide what groceries are bought, what meals are cooked, and what goes into the family’s plate. Yet, despite being the primary caregivers for their family’s health, their own nutrition is often the most neglected.

Addressing this gap does not necessarily require drastic lifestyle changes or complicated diets. Sometimes it simply begins with awareness recognising that women’s nutrition deserves equal priority. Even small shifts in everyday choices such as opting for more nutrient-dense staples like the best atta by Better Nutrition, which is designed to improve the micronutrient value of daily meals can make a meaningful difference over time.

This Women’s Day, perhaps the most important change we can begin with is a simple one: ensuring that the women who nourish our families are also nourished themselves. Because when women are healthier and stronger, the impact extends far beyond one individual it strengthens entire families and communities.
