India ruling the world at Met Gala 2025

As a professional model and beauty pageant, I have the privilege of witnessing fashion’s evolution on global platforms. As an Indian, I felt more pride in the strong representation of India at the Met Gala 2025 through virtual platforms. This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” offered a unique canvas, and our Indian contingent painted it with strokes of heritage, modernity, and undeniable star power.

Leading the charge was the one and only Shah Rukh Khan, making his much-anticipated Met Gala debut. And what a debut it was! Clad in a bespoke black floor-length, elongated coat by the maestro Sabyasachi Mukherjee, SRK embodied the theme with a regal yet contemporary flair. The kamarbandh added a touch of traditional Indian menswear, while the custom stack of jewelry and the Bengal Tiger Head Cane exuded a majestic aura. For the global audience, including fans like Khloe Kardashian who openly admired his look, SRK’s presence was more than just a celebrity appearance; it was a powerful introduction of India and Bollywood’s enduring charisma to one of fashion’s biggest nights. As Sabyasachi rightly stated, SRK, a “cinematic hero” with a massive international following, showcased “super stardom on a global stage.” This moment underlines the increasing global recognition of Indian talent and style.

Speaking of global impact, Priyanka Chopra Jonas once again proved why she’s a Met Gala veteran. Her interpretation of the theme was characteristically bold: a striking white polka-dot suit, exuding a dandy-esque charm, elevated with exaggerated black gloves and a dramatic hat. The magnificent emerald necklace was the perfect power accessory. Priyanka’s consistent ability to not just meet but master the Met Gala themes solidifies her status as a true global style icon, someone who, as many observers noted, truly understands the assignment. Her presence sets a high benchmark for Indian representation in international fashion.

Then there was Diljit Dosanjh, making his Met Gala debut and instantly making a mark. His Maharaja-inspired look, a collaboration with Prabal Gurung, was a vibrant homage to his Punjabi roots. The bespoke ivory sherwani, the turban, and the elaborate jewelry, including a necklace reminiscent of the Patiala Necklace, were breathtaking. The cape with the map of Punjab and Gurmukhi script was a powerful statement of cultural pride. Diljit didn’t just attend; he topped Vogue’s Best Dressed poll, beating fashion heavyweights like Zendaya and Rihanna – a remarkable feat that underscores the impact of his culturally rich and stylish ensemble. This victory highlights the growing appreciation for diverse cultural expressions in global fashion.

Kiara Advani also graced the Met Gala for the first time, making a memorable debut in a custom black-and-white strapless gown by Gaurav Gupta. Notably, she beautifully embraced her pregnancy, with the gown designed to highlight her baby bump. This was a significant moment, celebrating both Indian design and a personal milestone on a global platform. Kiara’s appearance signifies the evolving landscape of red-carpet fashion, embracing different stages of womanhood with elegance.

And let’s not forget the designers themselves. Sabyasachi Mukherjee, beyond styling SRK, also walked the Met steps in his signature understated yet impactful style, a black and white ensemble with a quilted overcoat and a jeweled turban. Manish Malhotra made his Met Gala debut, looking regal in a black overcoat with gold embroidery, a white shirt with bishop sleeves, and striking brooches. Their presence underscores the pivotal role Indian designers are now playing on the global fashion stage, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary aesthetics.

The Met Gala 2025 was a proud moment for India. It wasn’t just about celebrities walking a red carpet; it was a showcase of India’s rich cultural tapestry, its design prowess, and the global influence of its stars. From SRK’s majestic debut to Priyanka’s consistent brilliance, Diljit’s cultural statement, and Kiara’s elegant debut, India’s presence was felt profoundly. This year’s Met Gala affirmed India’s significant and growing voice in the world of fashion and lifestyle. I, for one, am excited to see this influence continue to flourish.
