Excerpt- Gehraiyaan’s cast is an example of portraying perfection in their performance.

The most awaited Bollywood drama of the year 2022- Gehraiyaan, has been released today on Amazon Prime Video. The story of Ayesha DeVitre and Sumit Roy has been weaved into a beautiful garment by the director Shakun Batra and has been decorated with its cast Deepika Padukone, Ananya Pandey, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Dhairya Karwa.

Deepika Padukone plays Alisha, a yoga instructor, and Dhairya Karwa plays Karan, a writer – a couple who live together. Ananya Panday plays Tia, an affluent woman, and Siddhant Chaturvedi plays Zain, a real estate agent. The couple is engaged, and a lavish Tuscan wedding is planned.

Shakun Batra begins stripping the veils of Alisha, Tia, and Zain’s characters as the four meet in the idyllic scene of the Arabian Sea, luxurious Mumbai flats, and a shoreline house. Alisha and Tia are cousins who grew up together, but they drift apart as life occurs, and their brutal reality now stands between them. Batra creates multiple unpleasant situations, and you can experience it in every scene. Deepika shares this unease as Alisha and Ananya as Tia on several instances.

The frames that Batra and his writers and cinematographer Kaushal Shah construct are the sources of his storytelling magic. On the surface, Tia and Zain’s lives appear perfect, but as you go deeper, Batra discloses each character’s flaws.

Batra never loses the audience’s interest as his narrative meanders naturally for two and a half hours. From Alisha and Zain’s affair to familial histories, the characters become more engaged with each wave used as a metaphor by the filmmaker. While the sea wind propels the first half of the picture, it is in the second half that life takes a nasty turn, both emotionally and romantically. You can feel the tension in the air while it is being portrayed by the characters majorly- Alisha and Zain.

Batra’s storyline gets further enmeshed into an interwoven labyrinth of lies, deceit, and betrayal, which his accompanying ensemble keeps up with admirably. Ananya Panday lives Tia’s affluent life as if she were meant for it while depicting profound emotions. Dhairya Karwa, on the other hand, makes his mark in every scene that he is present in.

Gehraiyaan’s distinguishing feature is its compassionate therapy of depression, suicide, PTSD, anxiety, and panic attacks. The film’s storyline and directors are careful not to go overboard but to reveal just enough to elicit emotional responses. With the intelligent background music, the script gives weightage to the visual narrative.

Deepika Padukone, as always, delivers a gut-wrenching performance that touches your heart while portraying anxiety attacks or her relationship with her father, played by veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah.  However, in the process, she does not invade the spaces of her co-actors and gives them an equal opportunity to flourish while they share the screen with her.

The filmmaker has accomplished a ratio of vulnerability, astonishment, anguish, and, most importantly, love. Overall, Shakun Batra’s Gehraiyaan is a fascinating insight into individuals’ and families’ previous decisions and interactions. We would give Gehraiyaan a rating of 4 on a scale of 5.
