As a surgeon, mother and founder of Eugenix Hair Sciences, I have grown to realise that one cannot have everything and do everything simultaneously. Being a doctor is a demanding profession that requires dedication, compassion, and long work hours. For women doctors, achieving a work-life balance can be particularly challenging. However, as a doctor, I understand our unique struggles. There are specific strategies that can help strike a better equilibrium between our’s professional and personal lives.

First and foremost, it is essential for women doctors to prioritise self-care. Taking care of oneself physically, emotionally, and mentally is crucial to prevent burnout and maintain overall well-being. Regular exercise, healthy eating, and finding time for relaxation are vital components of self-care that can help recharge and maintain energy levels.

Furthermore, effective time management is critical. Women doctors often have to juggle multiple responsibilities at work and home. Learning to prioritise tasks, delegate when possible, and set boundaries can help create a more manageable schedule. By allocating dedicated time for work, family, and personal interests, we ensure that each aspect of life receives the attention it deserves.

Equally, learning to say “no” when necessary is crucial. Women doctors often feel pressure to take on additional responsibilities and be available around the clock. Setting realistic boundaries and learning to decline excessive work demands can help create a healthier work-life balance.

Building a support network is vital for women doctors seeking work-life balance. Connecting with other female physicians, mentors, and support groups can provide valuable guidance, understanding, and encouragement. Sharing experiences, seeking advice, and receiving emotional support can help alleviate the challenges faced by women doctors and foster a sense of belonging and community.

Together, we can set an example for women doctors worldwide that one should never get so busy making a living that one forgets to live a fulfilled life. Achieving a work-life balance is a continuous journey for women, especially doctors. Creating a harmonious and fulfilling life by prioritising self-care, managing time effectively, building a support network, and setting boundaries should be prioritised. Female physicians must recognise that their well-being matters and that self-care is just as important as the well-being of their patients. The key is not to prioritise what’s on your schedule but to schedule one’s priorities.
